The History and Meaning of our Logo

Zonguldak Karaelmas University was established under the 9th (Additional) Article of the Law No.3837, which was published in the Official Gazette No.21281 on 11 July 1992. The name "Zonguldak Karaelmas University” was changed to “Bülent Ecevit University” under the 18th Article of Law no.6287 on 11 April 2012, which was published in the Official Gazette no. 28261. Pursuant to Article 6 of Law no.7141, which was published in the Official Gazette no.30425 on May 18, 2018, the phrase “Bülent Ecevit University” in the heading and the first paragraph of this article was amended to “Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University.”
The first province of the Turkish Republic, Zonguldak, was made an independent governorship and subsequently became a province when the sanjaks (districts) were abolished pursuant to Article 60 of the Constitution no 491 dated 1 April 1924.
The roots of the Faculty of Engineering, the core of the University, trace back to the School of Mining Engineering (Yüksek Maadin ve Sanayi Mühendis Mekteb-i Alisi). This school, which is the first higher education institution to train mining engineers in the Republic of Türkiye, was established by the decision of the Ministry of Trade in 1924, taking into account the insufficient number of “Turkish Mining Technicians”.
Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University, whose origins date back to the Yüksek Maadin ve Sanayi Mühendis Mekteb-i Alisi (Higher School of Mining Engineering), founded in 1924, officially recognized 1924 as its year of foundation—previously considered to be 1992—following a decision by the University Senate in 2023, the 100th anniversary of the Turkish Republic. In line with updating our foundation date and celebrating the 100th anniversary of the foundation of our university, it was determined to revise the logo of our university.
Accordingly, the outer ring of our logo has been determined as red, representing our glorious flag and the blood of our martyrs. The color red also symbolizes energy and ore, reflecting Zonguldak’s rich coal and natural gas reserves and its role as a national energy hub. Furthermore, it represents the energy of preparing our precious students, each regarded as a separate ore for the “Century of Türkiye”.
At the center of our logo is the “Uzun Mehmet Monument”, commissioned by the Turkish Coal Enterprise to commemorate the 50th anniversary of our Republic. This monument is known as the “Three Mehmets Monument” in Zonguldak. The first Mehmet represents the fallen soldier Mehmet, the second Mehmet represents the fallen miner Mehmet, and the third Mehmet symbolizes Martyr Uzun Mehmet, the legendary martyr and the first casualty of the mines. The monument at the center has been designed in turquoise, a blend of blue and green, to emphasize the image of Zonguldak as “The City Where Blue Meets Green”. Furthermore, Turquoise is known as the color of “Turkish Color”. Thus, our new logo, featuring the turquoise Uzun Mehmet Monument, a book placed beneath it representing the university, and the red outer ring, signifies our ongoing commitment to our flag, glorious history, martyrs, and the natural beauty of our homeland.
