Continuing to plan events to raise public awareness, Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University (BEUN) organized another significant program within the framework of “Science Café” meetings. The sixth session of the “5 Questions & 5 Answers Science Talks” series was held at BEUN Hospital under the title, “The Significance of Organ Donation”.
Organized by the BEUN Communication Office, which was established in line with the decision and incentive of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), and the initiative of the Rector of Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University (BEUN), Prof. Dr. İsmail Hakkı Özölçer, the sixth program titled “The Significance of Organ Donation” was held at BEUN Hospital.
Assistant Coordinator of the BEUN Corporate Communication Office and Head of the BEUN Science Communication Office, Asst. Prof. Dr. Melek Toparlak Şahin moderated the talk, and the guest speaker was BEUN Organ and Tissue Transplant Coordinator and the Faculty Member of the Department of Family Medicine, Prof. Dr. Erol Aktunç. The event was attended by many students and members of the public.
Held during the Organ Donation Week (November 3-9), the event focused on the significance of organ donations, the donation process, and the legal framework. Prof. Dr. Aktunç gave detailed information on the compatibility of organ donation with Islamic beliefs, donation requirements, and the process of donating organs through the e-Government portal. He also explained how donors can register at healthcare institutions, the necessity of family consent in cases of brain death, and the coordination of the donation process.
Answering the question “How is priority determined in organ transportation? And “What happens if the transplanted tissue is rejected?”, Prof. Dr. Aktunç noted that the donation process is determined in line with the scientific standards by the Ministry of Health Coordination Center, and when the tissue is rejected, the patients are re-listed.
Emphasizing that organ donation is not a medical necessity, but a humanistic responsibility, Prof. Dr. Aktunç said, “An organ donation can give life to a person. To have awareness on this topic as a society is an individual and social responsibility.” Thanking all the institutions and individuals who raise awareness on organ donations, Aktunç expressed his gratitude, particularly to BEUN Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Hakkı Özölçer and those who contributed to the organization of the program.
A certificate of appreciation was presented to Prof. Dr. Erol Aktunç by the Head of the BEUN Science Communication Office, Asst. Prof. Dr. Melek Toparlak Şahin. The event concluded with a commemorative photo.
