The historical nursing uniforms, reflecting the culture, historical development and professional symbols of the nursing profession from past to present, are now on display in newly designed, modern display cases at the Faculty of Health Sciences of Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University (BEUN).

With this initiative that was carried out at the Faculty of Health Sciences on İbni Sina Campus, cultural heritage of the nursing profession is now on display through an academic point of view; thus, a contribution was made to the scientific, cultural, and social responsibility mission of the university.  The uniforms are more than a reflection of the past. They are meaningful as historical items verifying the ethical values, transformation process, and the role of this profession in the health services.

This exhibition contributes to raising awareness for the historical development of the nursing profession, strengthening their professional identity and sense of belonging. The significance the faculty attaches to academic, cultural, and historical values has been demonstrated once again.

Rector Özölçer: “We are preserving and carrying the culture of nursing from past to present”

In his remarks, Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Hakkı Özölçer stated the following:

“Universities are not just institutions that produce academic knowledge, but a science hub that has the responsibility to carry the history culture, and values of the professions into the future. Nursing profession is a significant profession that touches human life directly, has high ethical values, and deep-rooted historical knowledge. Historical uniforms of the nursing profession exhibited at the Faculty of Health Sciences show the transformation of the profession from the Anatolian Seljuk Empire, Ottoman Empire, and the first years of the Republic to our modern day. The uniforms prepared representing the healers from Seljuks and Ottomans, along with the examples of uniforms belonging to Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing; Gevher Nesibe Hatun; and Safiye Hüseyin Elbi, the first official nurse of Türkiye demonstrate the richness and continuity of the nursing history.  I believe such efforts will contribute to raising awareness for the history of nursing and strengthening professional awareness among students. I extend my thanks to our academic and administrative staff for such a meaningful initiative and wish success for our valuable students.”
