
One of the most prestigious events in the world, the “44th International Conference on Ground Control in Mining” (ICGCM) was held in Beijing, China between 26th and 29th September. The event, hosted by China Coal Society and China University of Mining and Technology-Beijing (CUMTB) in cooperation with Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University (BEUN), paved the way for international academic and industrial collaborations.
In the conference held in the Beijing Conference Center and attended by more than 400 specialists in total, including industrial representatives, research institutions, and universities from 9 different countries, Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University attracted attention with its scientific contributions. Representing BEUN, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Şenol Hakan Kutoğlu, Prof. Dr. Servet Karasu, and academic member of the Department of Mining Engineering, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özarslan, chaired the sessions and gave scientific presentations on mining in Türkiye, sharing their knowledge on the international platforms.
Topics such as safe, efficient, and sustainable mining applications, technological innovations, green mining, and smart systems stood out in the conference. Participants gave speeches on significant topics such as environmental responsibility in mining, technological transformation, raising young talents, and increasing international collaborations. Issues such as the control of risks emerging from hard roof rocks, ecological coal mining, and modern approaches like “Longwall Mining Method with Controlled Collapse of Hard Roof Coal” were discussed at length.

The Rector of Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University, Prof. Dr. İsmail Hakkı Özölçer, stated the following on the event:
“Our university continues to take on new roles in terms of international collaborations and scientific production in the field of mining. We are proud to contribute to the ICGCM-44 Conference with the scientific studies of our academic members. BEUN continues to be a leading figure with its scientific activities both on the national and international platforms. Smart and green systems in mining not only reflect a technical necessity but also take on humanistic and environmental responsibility. Our university, which entered the academic world 101 years ago with mining education, continues to be a pioneer with significant studies. I would like to express my thanks to those who contributed to the organization of such a significant conference. I also thank our valuable academic staff representing our university with their scientific studies, which they presented at the conference, and wish them success in their future studies.”
The second of the conference, titled “International Conference on Green Intelligent Mining for Thich Coal Sea,” organized in Beijing in 2024 in cooperation with BEUN and CUMTB, and “China-Türkiye Thick Coal Summit” will be held in Zonguldak in April 2026.
