Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University (BEUN) has achieved another significant success in scientific research and projects. Project titled “Investigation of CO₂ Storage Potential in Carbonate Rock Formations of the Zonguldak Coal Basin,” by Asst. Prof. Dr. Candan Alptekin, member of Department of Mining Engineering, has been awarded support by Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) under the 3501–Career Development Program.

Scientific Contribution to Fight Against Climate Change

As part of the project that focuses on carbon storage technologies, CO₂ storage potential in carbonate rock formations of the Zonguldak Coal Basin will be investigated scientifically. Geological structure of the region will be examined in detail, and it is aimed to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions for the reduction of carbon emissions.

Strong Academic Collaboration

In the project to be carried out under the coordination of Asst. Prof. Dr. Candan Alptekin, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özarslan, a faculty member of Department of Mining Engineering at BEUN Faculty of Engineering. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Bilen, Asst. Prof. Dr. Betül Yıldırım from Middle East Technical University (METU), and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ömer Ündül from Istanbul Technical University will be involved in the project as researchers. The project bringing specialists from various universities stands out as a significant example of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Rector Özölçer: “We Contribute to Future with Our Scientific Projects”

In his remarks on the subject, BEUN Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Hakkı Özölçer stated the following:

“Scientific success achieved on the national and international levels is the most significant sign of research focused university vision. The project, carried out by Asst. Prof. Dr. Candan Alptekin and was entitled to support under TÜBİTAK 3501- Career Development Program, is valuable for the fight against climate change and sustainable environmental policies.

I believe that this research to be carried out to determine if carbon dioxide can be stored effectively and safely, will contribute to carbon management strategies and goal of environmental sustainability.  I wish success to all academics including advisors, researchers, particularly the lead in this project that demonstrates the research capacity and academic efficiency of our university.
