A new module has been added to the internet-based and interactive application, DepremBİS (Earthquake Information System) developed within the scope of the social responsibility project by Prof. Dr. Şenol Hakan Kutoğlu, a faculty member of the Department of Geomatics Engineering at Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University (BEUN) Faculty of Engineering. The extent to which a potential earthquake will be felt and expected damage levels can be examined visually and quantitatively thanks to the updated system.

The application that has been available on deprembis.com.tr since last year provides users with the opportunity to search for the risk of earthquakes by taking the fault lines, ground types, and earthquake data into consideration holistically. With the new module, users can now see the radius, intensity, and possible damage severity levels of the earthquake on the fault line they choose to screen.

Highlighting that 50 fault lines in Türkiye have been integrated into the software until now, Prof. Dr. Şenol Hakan Kutoğlu stated that the system is kept active and updated through new scientific data. Emphasizing that the main goal of the application is to raise awareness based on scientific data in Türkiye which faces the reality of earthquakes, Kutoğlu stated the need to have correct information on the fault lines, the gratitude of the potential earthquakes and the ground types.

Noting that the users can search for the possible level of damage that the fault lines can create, Kutoğlu evaluated Çınarcık line, that has been a topic of discussion lately, as an example. Stating that the areas that are expected to be affected in case of a breakage on the Çınarcık line can be screened through the app, Kutoğlu explained that the blue represents the areas that are expected to be mildly affected with no damage expectation, while yellow represents the areas where the earthquake will be strongly felt, but moderate damage is expected. Pointing out that areas with soft ground such as Küçükçekmece and Büyükçekmece, located by the Marmara Sea coast in İstanbul might be damaged more, Kutoğlu highlighted that the type of the ground is a significant factor that determines the effect of the earthquake.

Highlighting that the application is user-friendly, Prof. Dr. Kutoğlu stated that users can sign in on the deprembis.com.tr and choose the faultlines they think that might affect them and search for the areas to be affected and the possible damage levels easily.

The DepremBİS application, developed under the leadership of BEUN academic, received wide coverage in the national press, particularly Demirören News Agency (DHA) and it set an example of the effect of the scientific studies carried out by universities on the public.

In his remarks on the topic, the Rector of BEUN, Prof. Dr. İsmail Hakkı Özölçer highlighted that universities should stand out not only as a place for education and research, but through projects that prioritize the public, and added:
“When the reality that our country is in an earthquake zone is considered, the studies focused on raising awareness are deemed significant. The DepremBİS application developed by our faculty member, Prof. Dr. Şenol Hakan Kutoğlu is significant in terms of understanding the risks of the disasters and raising awareness. I find such projects that bring together scientific knowledge with the society significant and congratulate our academics who contributed to the project.”
