The Significance of the Correct Response in First Aid
Lecturer Dr. Esra Danacı, faculty member of First and Emergency Aid Program at Ahmet Erdoğan Vocational School of Health Sciences highlighted that being calm, confident, and practical in an emergency is vital. Lecturer Dr. Danacı stated that the first steps in the first aid are securing the emergency site, evaluating the situation of the patient or the injured, calling for help, and performing first aid. In cases where first responder teams cannot reach in a short period of time, first responder can carry the patient or the injured in a safe space without putting themselves in danger and using the right techniques. Emphasizing that evaluation in an emergency should be performed in a certain period of time and in three steps, Danacı said the steps should be the control, evaluation of the whole body, and taking patient’s history. Danacı also stated that knowing what not to do in a panic situation is also significant.
Lecturer Dr. Esra Danacı noted that automatic external defibrillator is one of the most critical applications of first aid in case of sudden cardiac arrest. Highlighting that using defibrillator on people with cardiac arrest or vital rhythm problems increases the chances of survival, Danacı stated that the device can be safely used by people who had the first aid training thanks to the audial and visual instructions. As part of the event, students had the chance to apply first aid practices on the model. In applications, the drills were conducted in 5 rounds, with 30 chest compressions applied in each round (30: 2 technique), was taught. Students actively participated in the event.
Highlighting that application contributes to making the acquired knowledge permanent, Lecturer Dr. Esra Danacı stated that the program was more meaningful thanks to the energy of the high school students.
The program ended with a question-and-answer session and a commemorative photo.
