Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University (BEUN) has started construction works on the Solar Power Plant (SPP) project to be implemented at the Çaycuma Vocational School campus in line with its sustainable campus vision and green transformation goals, with the first excavation work carried out at the site.

Field preparation and infrastructure works have accelerated on the major project initiated within the scope of the Public and Municipal Renewable Energy Project (KAYEP), carried out with World Bank financing under the coordination of the General Directorate of Construction Affairs of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change.

Clean Energy to Be Produced on an Area of 24,000 Square Meters

The Solar Power Plant, with a capacity of 1500 kWe (1861.2 kWp), is being established on an area of approximately 24,000 square meters at the Çaycuma Vocational School campus. Once completed, the electricity generated by the plant will be transferred to the BEUN Faculty of Medicine through the national grid by the balancing method. With the SPP becoming operational, approximately 25 percent of the Faculty of Medicine’s annual electricity needs will be met from renewable energy sources.

The plant, which is expected to produce clean energy for approximately 25 years, will not only reduce BEUN’s energy costs but also significantly reduce carbon emissions, while providing a living laboratory for academic and practical research.

Rector Ulusoy: “We Are Creating an Environmentally Friendly Campus Model That Produces Its Own Energy”

Emphasizing that the project is a strategic step for Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University and the region with the start of field works, Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ulusoy expressed the following:

“As Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University, we continue to implement environmentally friendly and innovative projects that use public resources in the most efficient way for a sustainable future. The Solar Power Plant investment, for which we have started field works at our Çaycuma campus, is one of the most concrete and strategic steps of our green campus vision.

Once our project is completed, we will meet approximately one-fourth of the electricity needs of our Faculty of Medicine from solar energy. In this way, we will both achieve significant cost savings and contribute to the protection of nature by reducing carbon emissions. In line with our green campus goals, we will continue our efforts without interruption to build a university model that is environmentally conscious, capable of producing its own energy and creating value for the future.

I would like to express my gratitude to our Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, and the officials of our Ministry, as well as our President of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar, and the entire YÖK family, for their support in bringing this important investment, which contributes to our country’s green transformation vision, to our University. I would also like to sincerely thank my valued colleagues who contributed to the implementation of the project.”
