
The fifth of the traditional “Autumn in Zonguldak / Patient Safety in Anesthesia Symposium,” organized in cooperation with the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation of Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University (BEUN) Faculty of Medicine and the Turkish Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimation (TARD), was held with the theme “Anesthesia and Safety in Patients with Obesity.”
The opening ceremony of the symposium was attended on behalf of the Rectorate of Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Servet Karasu, Dean of BEUN Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Hande Aydemir, Chief Physician of BEUN Hospital Prof. Dr. Burak Bahadır, President of the Turkish Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimation Prof. Dr. Jülide Ergil, academics and students. The symposium, held at Sezai Karakoç Cultural Center, brought together approximately 250 participants from Ankara, Konya, Kırıkkale, Yozgat, Çankırı, Sakarya, Kocaeli, Düzce, Bolu, Karabük, Zonguldak and İzmir.
In his opening speech, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Karasu thanked the faculty members of the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation and the Turkish Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimation for their contributions to the organization of the symposium and emphasized the high importance of anesthesiology.
In her speech, Prof. Dr. Hilal Ayoğlu, Head of the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation at BEUN Faculty of Medicine and Patient Safety Ambassador of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC), emphasized that more than one billion people live with obesity today and that obesity, which affects one in every eight people, has become a global public health crisis. Prof. Dr. Ayoğlu stated that the problems of obese patients, whom anesthesiologists encounter increasingly frequently in operating rooms, and the measures required to ensure that these patients can safely undergo surgery would be discussed in detail at the symposium.
In her speech, President of the Turkish Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimation Prof. Dr. Jülide Ergil thanked the Rectorate of Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University for hosting the symposium. She also expressed her thanks to all faculty members of the department who took part in the scientific and organizing committees, particularly the symposium secretary, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çağdaş Baytar, for their contributions to the organization of the symposium.
During the sessions held throughout the day, expert speakers in their fields discussed topics such as preoperative evaluation of obese patients, airway management, anesthesia practices, postoperative pain management and intensive care processes in light of current scientific data and clinical experience. During the oral presentation session, young researchers also shared their scientific studies with their colleagues.
