"Geodetic Information System Research-Development Project for Landslide and Earthquake Threats" protocol has been signed between Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University (BEUN) and Devrek Municipality. The protocol, which is a strong example of local management, aims to contribute to the monitoring and management of disaster risks through scientific methods.
The protocol was signed by the Rector of Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University and Devrek Mayor Özcan Ulupınar during the ceremony held at the Rector’s office. Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Şenol Hakan Kutoğlu, faculty member of Civil Engineering Asst. Prof. Dr. Seda Akduman, and Devrek Municipality civil engineer Sedat Kapucubaş were present during the ceremony.
As part of the protocol, it is aimed to determine the ground movements using the Sentinel-1 satellite data, developing a model that enables online data entry from the site in buildings-at-risk, designing a database in accordance with the needs, and transferring the data collected to the Geographical Informational System (CBS). It is also planned to do training on the applications, integrate the ground data in CAD format provided by the management into CBS media, establish a database on the media provided by the municipality, and provide access to CBS data from desktops and mobile vehicles within limits determined.
Rector Özölçer: “We will build stronger cities under the light of science”
In his remarks following the protocol signing, BEUN Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Hakkı Özölçer highlighted the significance of the cooperation and stated the following:
“Universities are not just academic institutions that provide educational activities, but science hubs that provide scientific solutions to the problems of the city they are in, guide the society, and shape the future. Thanks to the protocol signed with Devrek Municipality, we aim to develop a geodesic information system which is data-based on the risks of landslides and earthquakes, sustainable, and innovative. Using Sentinel-1 satellite data, having online data flow from the site, and establishing a database for the CBS will strengthen the capacity of the district to be ready for a disaster. We are glad to contribute to the safety of our people using our academic knowledge and technical expertise in the field. This cooperation is a concrete sign of university-local management solidarity. We believe each step taken in the light of science will make our cities stronger and safer.
I hope this cooperation will be auspicious for Devrek and our university. I would like to express my thanks to Devrek Mayor Özcan Ulupınar and Devrek Municipality. I would also like to thank our valuable academic and technical team for their dedicated work.”
