
The event titled “Bring the Most Plastic, Win a Thermos” was held by Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University (BEUN) Environmental Problems Application and Research Center at Farabi Youth Office Center with great participation to raise sustainable environmental awareness and teach waste management.
Students showed great interest in the event organized by BEUN Environmental Problems Application and Research Center to raise sustainable environmental awareness and build a greener and cleaner future. Plastic waste is a threat to the living by harming the ecosystem as it can stay in nature for years. Through this event, plastic waste that is harmful to the environment was collected and recycled. Students joined the competition bringing the plastic waste they collected to the designated area as part of the event organized to highlight the negative effect of plastic waste on nature and spread the recycling culture. The students who brought the most plastic were presented with thermos to promote environmentally friendly lifestyle.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Karaelmas: “Recycling Should be Widespread”
Commenting on the event held in front of the Farabi Campus Youth Office Center, Director of Environmental Problems Application and Research Center Asst. Prof. Dr. Deniz Karaelmas stated that plastic use should be limited and recycling should be a widespread habit for a sustainable future. She extended her gratitude to the Rector of Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University, Prof. Dr. İsmail Hakkı Özölçer for his support to the initiatives held at BEUN to create a sustainable future. She also thanked all the participants who contributed to environmental awareness.
Rector Özölçer: “We Have a Responsibility for a Sustainable Future”
In his remarks on the event, the Rector of BEUN, Prof. Dr. İsmail Hakkı Özölçer emphasized that environmental awareness should be created starting from young ages, and universities should take on a role in that. Rector Özölçer added:
“To protect the environment and build a sustainable future is not just the responsibility of institutions but of individuals. Our university acts on this responsibility with the initiatives and events to raise environmental awareness. We are pleased to see our students’ interest in such events. Today, we both contributed to nature and create an awareness of the environment by bringing waste into the recycling system. I express my thanks to those who contributed to the organization of this event, particularly the ÇESAM Director Asst. Prof. Dr. Deniz Karaelmas and the participants who helped create awareness.
The Event was Highly Praised by Students
Highlighting their awareness of the effect of plastic waste on nature, the students stated that they were glad to be a part of such an organization. Stating that their awareness towards the environment increased while collecting the plastic, the students thanked the university and the Environmental Problems Application and Research Center. The event ended with the presentation of gifts and a commemorative photo.
