Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University(BEUN) has pioneered a first in the country and offered a selective course to its students on “Financial Literacy, Financial Diplomacy, and Security” in the 2025-2026 Academic Year in collaboration with the Capital Markets Board of Türkiye (SPK). This course, the first and only one of its kind among universities in Türkiye, attracts attention with its multi-disciplinary structure and aims to raise financial awareness.
The Rector of BEUN, Prof. Dr. İsmail Hakkı Özölçer, gave the opening speech of this course that started in the Z6 Conference Hall in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, on October 1, 2025. In his speech, Prof. Dr. Özölçer emphasized the significance of this course for the academic community, students, and the country and stated the following:
“We are here to witness not just the first lesson of a course but an act of a vision. This interdisciplinary course, which is a first in Türkiye, brings students from the departments of medicine, engineering, fine arts, economics, and administrative sciences together. This course is a great example of collaboration between the university and public institutions. A high-level, quality, and international lesson plan was developed in accordance with the Bologna system. In the lesson, the political dimension of finance in the international arena will be examined in detail. The vision of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for generalizing financial literacy, the support of the Minister of Treasury and Finance, Mr. Mehmet Şimşek, and the SPK raised awareness on this topic in the country. We, Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University, as one of the academic institutions that concentrate on significant studies, are proud to contribute to this process. I would like to extend my thanks to the Chairperson of SPK, İbrahim Ömer Gönül, and Ms. Buket Salkım, who will teach the course. I hope this course will be beneficial for our university, students, and country.”
This course, titled “Financial Literacy, Financial Diplomacy and Security,” has been offered in the field of finance as a selective course for the first time in Türkiye in BEUN. One of the most interesting aspects of this course is the fact that most of the students are from the Faculty of Medicine. The financial policies of various countries will be examined in the course, and students will be provided with an opportunity to have an internship abroad and get to know international career options.
While May 22nd is celebrated as “Financial Literacy Day” every year, the collaboration between universities and SPK is strengthened. This project, which started at BEUN, is expected to contribute to raising awareness in the financial field.
